Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Abstract
F. Makino, Institute of Space and Astrronautical Science, Tokyo, telexes: "We have been regularly watching SN 1987A with the GINGA large-area proportional counters since Feb. 25. In the scanning observations of Aug. 15 we noted a significant flux increase over the previous level from the field of view including SN 1987A in the energy range 10-20 keV. This excess was confirmed by a following extended observation during Sept. 1-6. The present error box is 0 .2 wide and 1 long. The excess flux is estimated to be about 2 x 10*-11 erg cm-2 s-1 in the range 10-20 keV. The preliminary spectrum above 10 keV is very hard for any of the known classes of x-ray sources, but there is no evidence for a statistically significant increase in the last month." G. K. Moore, University of Wollongong, provides the following photometric observations: Sept. 3.7 UT, V = 5.03, B-V = +1.01, V-I = +1.59, V-R = +1.27.
